The Fellowship
San José Teaching Fellows is a movement
to bring the area's most talented individuals to teach in our most challenging
classrooms. We are seeking
100 of Silicon Valley's most outstanding professionals and graduates-from
all backgrounds-to create a network of reform-minded leaders committed
to raising student achievement in our city's public schools.
We welcome candidates from
all professional and academic backgrounds.
We are also making a particular effort to recruit Latino/a candidates,
bilingual Spanish speakers, individuals with a math or science major,
and individuals interested in teaching special education.
Fellows do not need to have
teaching experience or a background in education, but they must be dedicated
to ensuring the success of their students and their schools. Fellows
commit to teach for two years in a San José Unified School District
public school beginning this fall. Fellows are hired at a first-year,
pre-credentialed teacher's salary of $36,735 and will also receive:
- Full medical benefits
- Intensive pre-service training Ongoing
classroom support
- Additional compensation for advanced
degrees
Fellows participate in a summer training
institute prior to entering their classrooms.
Fellows also enroll together in a credentialing program at San
José State University. The credentialing program can take one
to two years to complete. After completion of the credentialing program,
Fellows have the option of enrolling in a one-year Master's Program
at San José State University, in which they can apply credentialing
credits toward the completion of the Master's degree.
Background
San José Teaching
Fellows is an initiative of San José Unified School District to
draw a new stream of high performing individuals into the classrooms that
need them the most. The Fellowship is targeted at professionals and mid-career
changers who do not have educational backgrounds but are eager to make
a commitment to San José schools and apply their past success to
our city's classrooms.
In order to accomplish this,
San José Teaching Fellows identifies people with excellent teaching
potential, provides them with intensive training before they enter the
schools, and coordinates their ongoing support once they are in their
classrooms. The vision of the Fellowship is to effect significant gains
in student achievement by placing our best minds in our city's schools.
