The Program

San José Teaching Fellows is a movement to bring the area's most talented individuals to teach in our most challenging classrooms.  We are seeking at least 125-150 of the Bay Area's most outstanding professionals and graduates – from all backgrounds – to create a network of reform-minded teachers committed to raising student achievement in our city's public schools.

San José Teaching Fellows is an Intern Pre Intern program of San José Unified School District. Intern programs allow an individual to teach full-time while completing all coursework required to obtain a teaching credential.

We welcome candidates from all professional and academic backgrounds.  We are also making a particular effort to recruit Latino/a candidates, bilingual Spanish speakers, individuals with a math or science major, and individuals interested in teaching special education.

Fellows do not need to have teaching experience or a background in education, but they must be dedicated to ensuring the success of their students and their schools.

Fellows commit to teach for two years in a San José Unified School District public school beginning this fall. Fellows are hired at a first-year, pre-credentialed teacher's salary of $36,735 and, while they will not receive additional monetary support for enrollment in the SJTF program, they will receive:

  • Full individual and family medical benefits
  • Excellent individual and family dental benefits
  • Free life-insurance coverage
  • Income protection plan
  • Retirement plan
  • Additional compensation for advanced degrees
  • Intensive pre-service training
  • Ongoing classroom support

Fellows participate in a six-week summer training institute prior to entering their classrooms.
Fellows also enroll together in a credentialing program at one of the District's univeristy partners.
The credentialing program can take one to two years to complete.
